Fake Juice in the Clubhouse

Do you notice something strange about this photo?

Yep, these celebrating baseball players are wearing what look to be ski masks.

This photo isn’t from the Chicago Cubs win last night against the San Francisco Giants.  It’s actually from their recent win over the Milwaukee Brewers that clinched a division title, but it highlights a trend that is becoming all too familiar in clubhouses.

Instead of a spontaneous celebration that flows out of the exuberance of a big win, locker rooms have turned into safe zones where everyone’s Rolex and $1,000 shoes are covered with plastic and where precious eyes are covered with expensive-looking goggles that look like they were stolen from a squadron of Stormtroopers.

But, alas, parties are always fun until something is broken or until someone gets poked in an eye, so I guess Major League teams are trying to be proactive.  That doesn’t meant it doesn’t look phony, though.
