My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. – Psalm 73:26 (ESV)
In Psalm 73, the writer laments the prosperity of the wicked, yet when he realizes where they are ultimately headed versus where he is going, his perspective changes. He remembers that the wicked will perish, but that he, as a child of God, will spend eternity in heaven.
Near the end of the Psalm, we are given verse 26 and this short passage contains an amazing message.
The words “flesh” and “heart” encompass our being. These are who we are on the outside and who we are on the inside. And both of these are bound to fail. They will fail on a daily basis as we sin – in word and deed and thought. Our flesh – including our beating hearts, is failing daily as we stumble toward the grave.
These things will happen, but we have an Overcomer. We have One who covers our sin – who pays for it and forgives it – and One who, at the point when our flesh totally fails and we physically die, steps in and provides a way to spend eternity with our Heavenly Father.
There is an amazing message delivered in verse 26. Because of this amazing message, let us worship our Lord today!
